A wedding venue’s application to extend its opening hours has provoked significant opposition from neighbouring communities.

Easton Grange, situated between the villages of Easton and Kettleburgh, is seeking permission to change its closing time from midnight to 2am for up to 30 days a year – not including Sundays.

A company representative, explaining the proposals to Easton Parish Council, said the extension would not alter the time that it finished serving alcohol but would enable events to wind down more gradually so that guests were not rushed off site.

Neighbouring residents, however, have objected on the grounds it may potentially cause disturbances every weekend throughout the summer.

David and Catherine Harris, in their letter of objection submitted to Suffolk Coastal District Council (SCDC), wrote: “It would be a great pity if the peace and tranquillity of the Deben Valley were to be spoiled by the creation of an entertainment venue, for whatever purpose, to the detriment of many.

“We do not blame anyone for trying to make a success of their business but the profits for a few should not be obtained at the costs of residents and the many visitors of this beautiful area.”

Further objections were raised by public speakers at Kettleburgh and Easton parish council meetings, which were held separately over recent weeks.

Kettleburgh Parish Council, after listening to comments made during the public forum, voted to recommend the refusal of the application.

The parish clerk, writing to the district council after the meeting, said the interest of amenity and the local environment would be “adversely affected” if the application was approved.

Councillors in Easton also expressed concerns about the lateness of the proposed extension, number of days it could run and the potential for accidents along an already treacherous stretch of road.

However, rather than recommend refusal, the council suggested that a closing time of 1am for 15 days a year would be more appropriate.

SCDC has set a determination deadline of Sunday, April 20, for the application, which was submitted on January 15.
