Sizewell B power station is to receive the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Order of Distinction to mark its outstanding safety record.

The nuclear plant, owned by EDF Energy, has achieved 17 consecutive Gold awards from RoSPA and will now receive special recognition at one of the safety organisation’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards ceremonies.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage improvement in occupational health and safety management. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as EDF Energy’s Sizewell B Power Station, contribute to raising standards overall and we congratulate them.”

Sean Verrall, head of health and safety at Sizewell B, added: “Safety is our overriding priority. Whilst we are proud to receive this prestigious award for our commitment to health and safety we must never allow ourselves to become complacent.”

Most of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive, grading achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations that maintain high standards in consecutive years can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction.
