AN 88-year-old completed a marathon bible reading in a bid to raise money for the repair of some church windows.

John Griggs, of Holton St Peter, near Halesworth, was at St Peter's Church in Sibton yesterday from 10am until 6pm.

Dozens of visitors came to listen as he read passages from St Mark's Gospel and Acts of the Apostles.

He managed to raise at least £500 to help repair six church windows - which is going to cost around £22,000.

Local resident Rosie Norton said: “John arrived this morning with his sponsorship form. People were invited in to listen to the readings and could donate money if they wanted to.

“The windows are in very bad repair. One window has been done already at a cost of £10,500 but the others are likely to cost around £12,000.

“The reading went very well indeed. Lots of people came along to listen. He was talking for 50 minutes out of every hour. It was a fantastic achievement.”
