A quantity of cash and jewellery were stolen following a distraction burglary at a home in Barningham last night.

Around 8pm yesterday, Wednesday May 20, a man called at the home of a couple in their 80s and said there had been an emergency in the village and that he needed to check their water supply.

He then distracted the couple by getting them to turn taps on in the bathroom and kitchen and let a second man into the property, who searched their home.

Both men left the property and are believed to have got into a black car that sped off from the address.

The couple then discovered their bedroom had been ransacked and police were called.

The man who called at the property is described as white, tall, of fairly big build, with an Irish accent and wore work man’s style clothing and a woollen hat.

The victims have been left extremely distressed and it’s known several hundred pounds and jewellery of sentimental value has been stolen.

Police are appealing for information and are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area around this time last night.

Anyone with information that may help is asked to call Bury St Edmunds priority crime team by dialling Suffolk police on 101, quoting crime number BR/15/470, or you can call Crimestoppers, anonymously if required, on 0800 555 111.
