He was the driver of red Suzuki Wagon that collided with a silver Audi A4 north-east of West Bergholt around 5.20pm.
Essex Police confirmed the man, who was in his 50s and from the local area, was pronounced dead at the scene of the smash on the B1508 Bures Road - also known as Colchester Road - near its junction with Crabtree Lane.
Two fire crews from Colchester were scrambled to the scene, where they used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the body. They left the scene around 7.40pm.
