Football fans have been urged to behave themselves and act responsibly as England face their much-anticipated World Cup semi-final against Croatia.

Essex Police stressed that most fans watching the games in pubs and venues across the area had shown their jubilation at the Three Lions’ success in a safe and respectful manner.

But a statement from the force said: “We have seen pockets of disorder across Essex similar to what has been seen nationally.”

It has put additional officers on duty after dealing with incidents of criminal damage, blocked roads, altercations and anti-social behaviour at previous matches.

These incidents have mostly been alcohol-fuelled, officers said.

Assistant Chief Constable Pippa Mills said: “We want people to go out in good spirits and full of optimism that England can reach a first World Cup final since 1966.

“However, we will not tolerate any unnecessary and senseless behaviour that disrupts our communities and ruins things for law abiding fans.

“If you are determined to go out and engage in this behaviour, we will detain you and bring you into custody.

“I would also continue to urge businesses to play their part by making sure they have the right measures in place to prevent and manage anti-social behaviour.

“People will go out with their families and friends in large numbers, so please be prepared and have a plan of action in place.

“Let’s all be united as one team and continue to enjoy watching England on their World Cup journey.”
