An uninsured driver tested positive for cocaine and cannabis after being given a roadside test by police, officers said.

Essex Police stopped the vehicle in Jaywick, Essex on Sunday, February 10.

Following the incident Pc Jon Hardy, roads policing constable for Essex Police based at the Stanway Roads Policing Unit, Tweeted: “Vehicle stop in Jaywick. Driver had no insurance to drive friend’s car and has tested positive for cocaine and cannabis. #Fatal5 #drugdriving.”

Drink and drug-driving is considered as one of the “fatal four” road offences along with speeding, using a mobile phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt.

Essex Police has raised concerns about rising rates of drug-driving in the county, with November last year seeing more people being arrested for being under the influence of drugs than drink.

Anyone who sees suspected drink or drug-driving should call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 101.
