Approximately 12,000 properties in Suffolk and 11,000 in Essex remain without power almost a day-and-a-half after the worst storm in a decade.

UK Power Networks have restored power to 14,500 homes in the two counties since this afternoon.

Many of the areas still affected are rural communities such as Ashbocking, Burgh, Borley and Mistley.

One place without power is Hurstlea Court in Needham Market, a sheltered housing scheme for the over 60s run by Mid-Suffolk District Council (MSDC).

They have been without power for over 24 hours and a member of the public was concerned for the welfare of the residents.

However MSDC said they have made provisions for making sure the 20 people living at Hurstlea Court were being kept safe and warm.

A council spokesperson said: “Two members of staff were on site all through the night.

“Fire alarms and emergency pull cords were out of action so the staff members stayed on all night and proactively checked on residents.

“The common room is heated and warm and we’re providing hot drinks and food with a gas hob. Meals on wheels will be coming in at lunch time.

We have been speaking to UK Power Networks and they assured us the power should be back on sometime between mid and late afternoon.

“We have been doing all we can to make sure residents are comfortable and staff are on site to kope with any problems.”

Some people have also been visiting their local pubs in order to get food and warmth.

General manager of The Westleton Crown pub, Gareth Clarke, said: “I think people here are just grateful to see some light, have some warm food and a cup of tea.”

“Requests for cups of tea have been made quite a lot today.”

Meanwhile UK Power Networks have thanked people for their patience while they try to restore power to those still in the dark.

1,000 engineers are currently working to repair the damaged network and restore power to customers and they hope to have 98 per cent of power supplies which were affected restored by Wednesday.

Nearly 650,000 customers were affected in the biggest storm the company has had to cope with since 2002, the power firm said in a statement this morning.

Director of customer services Matt Rudling said: “We would like to thank people for their patience if they are still without power, and stress that we are working to restore all supplies as quickly as is safely possible.

“A lot of hard of work is going on round the clock, behind the scenes and we are making good progress with repairs.”
