Gunfire and explosions may be heard across parts of Essex today as part of a military training exercise.

MOD Shoeburyness is scheduled for another day of munitions testing – after explosions earlier this week were reportedly heard as far away as Manningtree and Mersea Island.

Regular tests and training are held at the range in Shoeburyness to ensure the safety and effectiveness of munitions used by the UK armed services.

The base is also involved in the safe disposal of expired ammunition and explosive ordnance disposal techniques.

Many of the service personnel trained at Shoeburyness are deployed on active service shortly after completing the course.
