BALACLAVA-wearing ram raiders were left empty-handed after attempting to steal a van loaded with copper.

The three men broke into Beehive Coils's copper pipe factory in Studlands Park Avenue in Newmarket on Wednesday evening.

Police believe the men knocked through the rear wall of the factory, got into the main workshop and loaded three large drums of copper onto one of the firm's vans.

A forklift truck was then used to ram the large roller door out of its runners and they then drove through the yard, through security gates and out into Studlands Park Avenue.

But the raiders triggered the alarm as they rammed into the roller door and the police arrived at the scene in time to spot the men driving the copper-laden van down nearby Willie Snaith Road.

A police spokeswoman said the van was abandoned in the middle of the road with the copper drums still inside.

The men fled on foot before being picked up by a G-registered Ford Sierra which drove off at speed on to the A14, she said.
