The car, containing two adults and four children, caught fire after it was involved in a collision with three lorries and another car on the M6.
It was originally though that five people had died, but a sixth person - a very small child - has since been identified.
The accident happened at 10.40pm last night between junction 16 at Barthomley and junction 17 for Sandbach on the Cheshire stretch of the road.
A Portuguese lorry driver in his mid-40s, who works for a Spanish firm, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The driver is being questioned by police.
