Excited students enjoyed a mixture of joy and relief at Felixstowe Academy today as they celebrated their A level results.

The academy saw an improvement in results year-on-year – with 70% of students gaining A* to C grades compared with 62% last year, and 97% achieving A* to E.

In Maths, 95% of students achieved A* to C grades, with 26% achieving A*.

Some 77% of Physics, 75% of Chemistry and 71% of Biology students achieved A* to C grades, and 83% of English Language students gained the highest grades.

Principal Andrew Salter said: “It would be true to say that we are all delighted with the performance of all our A level students this year.

“We have worked hard to ensure that we have given good advice and guidance to our students at the beginning of their Sixth Form studies in terms of appropriate course choices to match their skills and abilities following their GCSE successes.

“We are now seeing the results of this along with the fact that we have been constantly monitoring and improving our teaching at KS5.

“As well as the significant improvements in our headline figures this year compared to last, we are delighted to be reporting significant individual achievements from a large number of our students, with 15% of these achieving A* grades this year.

“I am delighted that many of our students are now able, with these excellent results, to move on to the next stage of their lives with confidence, a sense of pride, achievement and with excitement that the future for them is shining bright.”

Felixstowe Academy student Annabel Hood, 18, achieved three As and A* and will be going to read history and law at Clare College, Cambridge.

She was “shocked and very happy” with her results but said it had taken a lot of hard work and focus to achieve her success.

She said: “I had to lock myself away and study really hard to get the results needed.

“I always had a clear goal, knowing I wanted to study history and law. I just had to really going for it to achieve what I needed for my university place.”

Christian Hurry, 18, achieved 100/100 marks in two of his exams, maths and mechanics, as he gained four A levels – three As and an A* - to study physics at Manchester University.

He said: “I am bowled over – my results really exceeded my expectations. It was incredibly hard work and at times a bit manic. I have been chilling since the end of the exams but now I am really excited and looking forward to university.”

Imogen Tink, 18, gained three A grades to secure her place at Birmingham University to study English. She said: “I had this horrible feeling that it was all going to go terribly wrong, but I am thrilled with the results and really excited.”

Elizabeth Wadsworth, 18, gained five A levels – two A*, two As and a B – and is off to Sheffield to study bio-chemistry and micro biology and aiming to carry on for a doctorate and a career in scientific research.

She said: “I love science and find it so interesting and want to make it a lifelong study.”
