A couple from Felixstowe will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary next month.
Wyn and Pat Goulborn first met at the tender age of five when they used to walk to school together in Hythe in Kent.
Now aged 94 and 93 respectively, the couple are preparing to celebrate seven decades of happy memories.
On their first day at school Wyn is supposed to have told Pat’s mum : “Don’t worry, Mrs Goulborn, I’ll look after him.”
After a few years Mrs Goulborn’s family moved away with the pair corresponding by post.
The pair were to remain separated until after the second world war. Mrs Goulborn worked in the Auxiliary Fire Service, drove tractors in the Women’s Lan Army and joined the WRNS in 1944. While Mr Goulborn joined the RAF as a wireless operator and air gunner.
After the war the pair reunited and got married in Hythe on August 7 1948.
The couple have five children,10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, including three sets of twins.
Mr Goulborn returned to the RAF after the war, he was stationed for a time at RAF Bawdsey but also spent many years travelling around the world.
As time went on the family moved to Felixstowe in a house they over half a century ago.
Mrs Goulborn went on to work for the gas board and then in the Magpie bookshop.
After retiring the couple continued to travel the world travelling to places like America, New Zealand and Australia, where one of their daughters lives.
As well as travelling around the globe the couple have fond memories of spending time in an around Felixstowe.
“These days they don’t travel quite as far afield,” said one of their daughters Jacky Robson, “but do enjoy a walk along Felixstowe prom and days out at Aldeburgh and Thorpeness, as well as spending time and celebrating with the extended family.”
August 7 will also mark Mr Goulborn’s 94th birthday meaning he has never forgotten a wedding anniversary in the couple’s many years together.
