Seven fire crews were called to tackle a blaze in a 25 acre field in Suffolk today.

The fire broke out in a field of loose straw and standing crops off London Road in Newmarket shortly before 3pm yesterday.

Firefighters from both Suffolk and Cambridgeshire were dispatched to the scene.

They spent an hour tackling the blaze.

Meanwhile, firefighters were called to another field fire in Essex just over 10 minutes later off Colne Road, Bures.

Two crews from Sudbury fire station in Suffolk supported colleagues from Halstead at the scene.

The fire is thought to have started in a combine harvester and spread to the surrounding standing crops.

Half of the 15 acre field was on fire, a spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said.

The fire was under control by 4.05pm.

The warm weather and dry conditions have led to a spate of wildfires this weekend.
