Hundreds of people were this morning getting on their bikes and setting off on rides of up to 100 miles as part of an annual mass cycling participation event.

The fifth Ipswich Cycle Swarm was starting from Christchurch Park – with experienced cyclists and beginners taking part.

The event had originally been scheduled to take place last weekend but was postponed because of the wet and windy weather.

Today though cyclists were blessed with a beautiful autumn morning and a fine forecast for the whole day to enjoy riding through the Suffolk countryside.

Riders were able to pick their route, choosing between 25, 50 or 100 miles.

All three routes started at Christchurch Park and headed out of Ipswich, passing through Woodbridge, before the 50 and 100 mile riders split off to head out to Framlingham and Dennington.

All finishing participants will receive a bespoke medal and certificate on their return, as well as free event photos.

Meanwhile, runners were preparing for the annual Martlesham Heath 10k today, which will be included in this year’s Suffolk Grand Prix of running events selected from the calendar over the course of the year.

Organised by the Lions’ Club of Woodbridge and District with Felixstowe Road Runners, the late season event has a fast, flat course, offering runners a chance to record a personal best time and earn points towards the season’s championship.

Races start and finish on The Green, near The Douglas Bader and St Michael and All Angels.

The 5k and Fun Run start at 10am, with the 10k at 11am.
