Fleetwood pier was almost destroyed in the early morning after fire hit the structure which had been boarded up for some time.
Last year a proposal to turn it into a residential development was opposed by local residents and the town's tourist industry.
The pier dates from 1906 and was one of the last to be built in Britain during the early years of the 20th century.
