A man is fighting for his life today after he stunned shoppers when he entered a Norfolk supermarket on fire.

Emergency services were called to reports of a man in distress at the Tesco superstore, at Kilverstone, near Thetford, at about 9.45pm, where he was suffering from serious injuries.

On arrival, police officers found a man, in his twenties, with severe burns close to the building, off Norwich Road.

Initial reports from an eyewitness said they saw a man enter the store while ablaze. It is not clear how he came to be on fire.

A Norfolk police statement said: 'Enquiries are under way to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident. However, at this stage, no one else is believed to be involved.''

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: 'We were called this evening to an incident at the Tesco store in Kilverstone.

'An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance officer, and the East Anglian Air Ambulance were sent to the scene to treat a man, believed to be in his twenties, who had suffered severe burns across his body.

'The critical care team administered treatment on scene to help stabilise the casualty, before he was taken by land ambulance to West Suffolk General Hospital in Bury St Edmunds in a serious condition.'

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service crews from Watton and Thetford also assisted.

Norfolk Constabulary would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed what happened or seen a distressed male in the area prior to the incident.
