Crews in Sudbury were called to what was reported as a house fire earlier.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was informed of the fire in Head Lane, Great Cornard, at around 4.40pm.
But on arrival the fire was located in a waste bin which was against the side of the building.
Using two sets of breathing apparatus to get close to the fire, crews used a hosereel to put out the flames.
The fire did not affect the internal structure of the house. It was under control just before 5pm.
