A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the large fire in Berecroft, Harlow and is currently in police custody.

The blaze started shortly before 11.30pm last night and a number of houses were evacuated as seven fire crews worked to contain the flames.

Severe damage was caused to the house where the fire broke out and the six other houses in the terrace were damaged by smoke and fire spreading through shared loft space.

The fire was extinguished by about 5am, using three main jets, two hose reel jets and firefighters wore 30 sets of breathing apparatus.
