A DISABLED man was at the centre of a dramatic rescue operation this afternoon after he became trapped in a burning building.

Crews were called to Lowfields in Earls Colne at about 4pm where the pensioner, in his 90s, was caught in his room.

Two crews from Halstead attended the fire and control operators kept the wheelchair-bound man calm as he was stuck in the room with the burning sofa.

The line was kept open and the pensioner told the controller exactly where he was so crews could get to him and get him out as quickly as possible.

The man was quickly rescued and fire was fully out by 4.40pm and crews used two sets of breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet.
