FIREFIGHTERS tackling a barn blaze at a remote Suffolk farm were forced to deal with the threat of gas cylinders stored inside.

Crews from Clare, Melford and Sudbury were called to the fire in Colt Hall Road, Cavendish, at about 3.30pm yesterday.

A 100-metre cordon was established around the fire because of the danger posed by the potentially explosive cylinders and structures were set up to enable firefighters to tackle the blaze from a distance.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire Service said the building, measuring 25 metres by 30 metres and about a mile away from the main village, was used for the storage of farm machinery.

Firefighters are due to return this morning to enter the building in daylight so they can find the cylinders inside and make a decision on how to proceed.
