A reduced service is running on the line between Norwich and London after fallen trees caused damage to overhead powerlines this evening.

Greater Anglia have warned passengers there is damage in three separate areas - Wivenhoe, Manningtree and Diss.

A statement said: “There are also storm warnings in place for coastal areas of Suffolk and Norfolk.”

There are currently no services between Colchester and Clacton in either direction and it is unlikely the situation will change today.

“We are working to run a very limited rail replacement bus service between Colchester and Clacton. Customers are advised not to travel,” the statement said.

“There is no service between Colchester and Norwich in either direction. Customers travelling between London and Norwich are advised to travel via Cambridge/Ely. London Underground and First Capital Connect are accepting Greater Anglia tickets.”

Plus the Ipswich to Felixstowe, Beccles to Lowestoft and Norwich Greater Yarmouth/Lowestoft service have also been suspended now.

Commuters have taken to Twitter to express their anger. One passenger said: “Anyone on trains back from London tonight, if you can get off before Colchester! Complete nightmare 1000’s of passengers stuck there.”

Others complained the roads were also gridlocked as friends and relatives tried to make their way in to collect stranded travellers.
