TWO drivers have been prosecuted after clocking 140mph and 120mph respectively on the same west Suffolk road on the same day.

Yesterday, Jack Delaney, 21, of Sussex Road, Bury St Edmunds, admitted breaking the speed limit by driving a Nissan GT-R at 140mph on the dual carriageway of the A134 at Fornham St Martin on July 28.

In an unrelated incident, Daniel Roberts, 25, of Low Street, Bardwell, exceeded the speed limit by driving a Renault Clio at 120mph on the same road on the same day. He also admitted the offence.

The speed limit on that stretch of road is 70mph.

Lesla Small, prosecuting, said Delaney was stopped by police at 7pm after an officer with a laser recorded the speed. The defendant told them he “was an idiot and he was just going to meet his new boss and there was no good reason for the speed he was doing”.

Paul Booty, mitigating, said Delaney, who had been lent the car the weekend, had been running a bit late. “A young man and wanting to impress and he was indeed successful and got that job.”

He said the defendant, whose work as a gas engineer for a refrigeration service involves driving, risked losing his job if he lost his licence.

Robin Howe, chair of the bench, said “This speed was exceptional. The court has tried to deal with it in a way which allows you to continue in your employment, but if you speed in any way again, particularly in a way that is that high, that won’t happen.”

Roberts was clocked at 120mph at 6.30pm in the same “speed trap” by police on that road. Miss Small said he told police: “It’s my weekend car. I don’t get the chance to open it up very often. It’s just me being stupid.”

Mr Booty said Roberts worked as an audio visual technician for a small company. “At the moment Mr Roberts is the engineer ans he will be difficult to replace. His employer sits in the public gallery. What will happen is they will have some very long days because his employer will literally have to take him to every job and collect him from every job.”

He added Roberts currently had nine points on his driving licence.

At the hearings at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court both defendants were disqualified from driving for 30 days and ordered to pay a £700 fine, £85 towards prosecution costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
