Visitors were given a taste of a Norman battle, with soldiers dressing new recruits in armour and tabards before picking weapons and fighting.

There were also less violent historical re-enactments, with medieval storytellers regaling crowds with stories in costume and talks on how knights of the time would set up camp or prepare before a battle.

The day took on the narrative of performances where audiences could meet the garrison troops considering rebelling against the king of the castle and built towards an exciting finale when the troops finally lay siege to the castle walls.
