Matthew Woods, of Chapman's Butchers in the Triangle Shopping Centre, was crowned category champion for his beef sausages at the East Midlands Regional Roadshow and Product Evaluation Event for butchers.

The event, which took place at the East of England Showground in Peterborough, was organised by the British Pig Executive and saw a total of 36 butchers and 170 products.

From the 10 categories Mr Woods, achieved the gold award in the lamb or beef sausage category and said he was optimistic going in to the competition.

He said: “It was great to become champion of this category - I would have been disappointed if we hadn't as I was sure the beef sausage would do well. It also sets a benchmark for our customers who can be reassured the products they buy from us are of top quality.”

Sausages are judged using a varied criteria ranging from the all-important taste and smell through to ease of cutting and texture.

Keith Fisher, the executive's butchery and product development manager, said: “Our congratulations go to all butchers who took part and in particular, the category champions. The standard of entries was exceptionally high.”
