A car which featured in the 1983 film Sahara will go under the hammer in Colchester this week.

The replica Hispano Suiza which appeared alongside stars Brooke Shields and Sir John Mills is part of a specialist collectors’ auction at the Reeman Dansie auction house in Wyncolls Road on Wednesday.

Built on a pre-Second World War Rolls Royce chassis with a Jaguar running guard and based on a famous French up-market racing car, the car has been described as “a real Mr Toad special” by auction house managing director James Grinter.

It is only estimated to fetch £2-3,000, though the auctioneers have already received a number of calls from Brooke Shields fans.

Also featuring at the auction is a red 1958 Jaguar XK150 restored to mint condition.

The car has only had two owners, the last of which lived in Mersea Road, Colchester, and died last year aged 91.

It comes with a complete service history, including every single bill for work carried out to it, and includes the sale receipt from when it was bought in 1965 – for the princely sum of £495.

However it is now expected to sell for £45-55,000 under the hammer.

Mr Grinter said: “A two-owner Jaguar is very unusual, they have usually changed hands 25-50 times by now.

“People usually chuck out the bills too, and some of these are amazing. You can see a service used to cost £6.”

The auction begins tomorrow, with the cars being sold on Wednesday.
