These pictures may look like scenes from Wacky Races, but these carts are not cartoons – they are real-life, homemade creations.

The Framlingham Gravity Go Cart Race took place yesterday, with colourful contraptions running riot through the grounds of Framlingham College.

Organised by Spadge Hopkins, with the help of Deben Valley Scouts, the event is now in its fifth year and was being held at the new venue for the first time.

The award for Best Cart went to the Beale family for their impressive fire engine called Dennis, which was fitted with a bell, ladder and working hose, which squirted water along the route.

The idea behind the race day is that families enjoy building a go cart over the summer and there are separate challenges for children and adults.

Mr Hopkins said the day had been “really successful” and had those taking part had come up with some brilliant carts.

He said: “We used to hold it on the Market Hill and had to have the road closed, but we changed venue this year thanks to Framlingham College – it’s all held on their grounds.

“It used to be just about having fun until the town council pulled out of supporting it fully, but then Deben Valley Scouts wanted to help by taking it on and without them we couldn’t have done it.

“We raise money for them now on the day, as well as having a lot of fun.”

And for the fifth year running, the title of Worst Cart went to Karl Legg, who saw the wheels fall off his contraption just after the start.
