Enterprising youngsters have taken the initiative to prepare for their future at their own careers fair.

Representatives from a number of businesses were invited along to Melton Primary School to explain what they did and give pupils the chance to find out more.

The event was organised by the Melton Meet Up group, made up of youngsters in years four and five.

Headteacher Mark Girling said the event was a huge success, helping to develop closer links between the school, the community and local businesses.

“We really believe that not only should we promote the highest standards of academic achievement, this should go hand in hand with developing keen, enthusiastic learners, who want to develop themselves and who have clear aspirations for the future,” he said.

Mr Girling said the event also provided the children who organised it with valuable experience, as they had to send emails, plan the layout of the room, develop a timetable of class visits and even arrange catering.

He praised the efforts of teaching assistant Patsy Fosker, who has been leading the group, and Keith Eggleton, who has been working with the school to develop teamwork and a sense of responsibility among the children.
