MORE than 100 hardy souls braved the ice cold North Sea for a Christmas Day tradition that is almost 60 years old.

Around 500 spectators turned out in force to watch as the brave swimmers took the plunge on Clacton’s West Beach.

The popular annual event has been held by the town’s swimming club every year since 1953.

Organiser Fred Eastman has taken part in every one along with John Ransome.

He said: “There were more than 100 people who actually went into the sea.

“It’s a completely spontaneous swim - people just turn up. We’re delighted with the number of people.

“We were lucky with the weather. There were a couple of showers but generally it was dry. It was as cold as ever but it’s all part of the enjoyment.”
