FORMER British tennis star Greg Rusedski officially opened the impressive new Indoor Tennis Centre at Bury St Edmunds' Culford School yesterday.

The Indoor Tennis Centre, which has been built next to Culford's Sports Centre, cost 900,000 and first opened in January. It was built in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Sport England.

The four indoor courts, together with the existing six outdoor courts, means that Culford can now offer all year round tennis facilities for pupils and the local community.

Rusedski won 15 singles titles before his retirement in 2007. Since then he has become the Talent and Performance Ambassador for British Tennis. He said: “This is a wonderful facility and will benefit players of all ages. I've just had a quick hit with a few of the young players here and a few of them out rallied me a few times so that certainly bodes well for the future.

“There has been a massive amount of improvement in British tennis over the last two and a half years. At Under-14 level we have got four boys in the world top 10.

“Now, in Culford, Suffolk has a brilliant centre to become part of the LTA's continuing drive for excellence.”

David Hall, Culford's Director of Tennis, said: “The opening of the new Indoor Tennis Centre will ensure that Culford will play a significant national role in producing the next stars of the future.”
