ABOUT 25 people were evacuated from their homes this morning due to fears about a gas leak.

At about 10.50am, a car collided with a gas main outside a house in Beccles Road in Carlton Colville. Emergency services were called to the scene because gas was leaking from the unit.

People were evacuated from their homes around the gas main at about 11.15am. The A146 Beccles Road was closed from the corner of Cotmer Road at the Flying Dutchman pub to the roundabout near the Three Horseshoes pub in Worlingham, near Beccles.

Officers from the National Grid were called in to attend.

The gas pipe was eventually capped at about 1.15pm. The houses were checked to make sure that there were not any pockets of gas remaining and the residents were allowed to return home just after 1.30pm.

The road reopened at 1.35pm.
