CATERING students at West Suffolk College got their hands stuck into a mountain of flour, sultanas and suet as they created an enormous Christmas pudding big enough for 1,000 people.

Roger Carter, a chef lecturer at the college for the past 20 years, said it was a big challenge for the first year students to see what goes into a traditional festive treat.

He said: “Most are bought over the counter now so we thought we'd take this chance to make a big one from scratch. None of the mixers are big enough to handle the quantity of ingredients so all seven students are mixing and stirring by hand.”

He said the colossal pudding would take more than seven days to prepare and cook before the first slice received a dollop of brandy butter in the restaurant.
