Once again, the world is my oyster - my new passport has arrived. My husband asked if he should put it in the drawer with his. I said that was fine as long as they didn’t breed.

It turns out my allegation, in this column a couple of weeks ago, that passports used to be issued by Customs and Excise, was quite wrong.

Jim Botsford of Felixstowe kindly emailed to tell me they come from the Home Office and that HMRC (formerly HM Customs and Excise) have never had the pleasure of sticking in my passport photograph.

A lucky escape.

I must have been one of new Home Secretary Theresa May’s first customers. I hope she’s sleeping all right after seeing my picture.
