A MAN has been winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after becoming stuck in mud off the Essex coast.

The emergency services were called at just before 5pm today and the man was eventually located in St Osyth Creek and helped back to dry land by the crew of an RAF rescue helicopter.

A Thames Coastguard spokesman said: “Luckily he was only been up to his ankles in the mud. He was winched up and then taken to the causeway at St Osyth.”

The man was uninjured and after being checked over by ambulance crews, he went on his way.
