The students at Helmingham Primary School enjoyed a very special ceremony this afternoon, inspired by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming nuptials.

The children have spent the week preparing for their very own version of the royal wedding – with the boys and girls taking it in turns to play Harry and Meghan in rehearsals.

The big event replicated many of the traditional elements – including the exchanging of vows, plus music from a little gospel choir.

The ceremony also featured a mini vicar and Archbishop of Canterbury, ready to welcome the happy couple into married life.

After the pair were ‘wed’, the children went to sign a mock register.

The students enjoyed a number of themed classes thoughout the week to prepare them for the mock wedding, including using their maths skills to bake 120 cakes, and making bunting using a sewing machine. The children also handwrote invitations to the ceremony, and practised their geography by created a model of Windsor Castle using aerial pictures.

Class teacher, Mrs Borrett, said: “They immediately said they wanted to do a wedding. We spent the whole week preparing for it.

“We have done lots of role play – everyone had had a go at dressing up. The whole school is buzzing about it.”

She said that the children were inspired by what they learned, adding: “A lot of them have gone home and asked their parents about weddings.”

After a week of SATS, Mrs Borrett said it was important for the children to relax.

She added: “It was a really nice way to end the week.”
