Two extraordinary women from Chelmsford who played a crucial role in the fight for suffrage will be remembered at an event in the city.
A talk as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days will mark the roles played by Anne Knights, who created the first ever leaflet to promote women’s suffrage, and Grace Chappelow, who spent time behind bars for her suffragette activism.
Ms Chappelow became famous for her “mischievous actions, including smashing windows at the Mansion House London”.
The event, which is being organised by Chelmsford Civic Society, will be held at The Transition, Fenton Court City Park West, in Chelmsford – which displays a blue plaque in memory Ms Knights, who also devoted her life to anti-slavery campaigns.
The event takes place on Friday, September 14 at 7pm.
