Over 1,300 people have been affected by repeated power cuts in a number of east Suffolk villages over the past few weeks.

Villagers in the Wilford Peninsula, which consists of places like Hollesley, Bawdsey and Alderton, have faced multiple power cuts of less than a minute in length since December 23.

The power cuts have been taking place several times a week , according to residents, but always take place between 4 and 5pm.

Many of those living in the region have been left frustrated by timers and clocks being re-set but there have been bigger problems caused by the power cuts including surges which have damaged electrical goods.

At Hollesley Church power cuts have also caused problems with kit used by rural broadband company FibreWifi who provide super fast broadband in the area.

Gary Disley, the managing director for FibreWifi said: “Over the Christmas period we noticed that the power was coming on and off.

“We have batteries which are the back up on our radios in the area with which we connect our customers.

“On one of the days the batteries ran down. Some of our customers were without service for hours.

“It’s an inconvenience for us but there’s nothing we can do.”

In total customers were left without wifi for around eight to ten hours in some places.

“Initially I just thought it was myself,” said Judi Hallett, clerk to Hollesley Parish Council.

“The whole of the peninsula has been affected,” said Mrs Hallett, “but only for a few seconds.”

“It’s an inconvenience,” said Mrs Hallett.

The council is urging residents to make contact with UK Power Networks and continue to raise the issue when it occurs.

The company manage and maintain electricity cables across the East of England and have been look at the problem.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said it would continue to monitor the power supply in the area.

“We apologise for recent power interruptions in the Hollesley area that have lasted a matter of seconds. We understand the inconvenience caused and are investigating the issue.

“The overhead lines will be inspected and we will continue to monitor the network and take any further action required to ensure reliable electricity supplies.”
