WHEN farmer Lonnie Collyer installed his first barn owl box he didn’t expect his grandchild and first barn owl chick to be born on the same day.

Mr Collyer’s daughter, Michaela Gilham, was heavily pregnant when she accompanied her father, who lives in Ilketshall St Margaret, near Bungay, to check the newly installed feature.

They were delighted to find seven eggs inside and when they returned several months later with Steve Piotrowski of the Suffolk Community Barn Owl Project – a partnership between Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Suffolk Ornithologists Group – there was much jubilation as the eldest chick was exactly the same age as Michaela’s new baby boy, George, who was seven weeks old.

SWT is looking to install nesting boxes for barn owls across Suffolk. Visit www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org or call 01473 890089 for more information.
