A Suffolk village is to pay tribute to its young men who died during the First World War with a special centenary event of recollections.

In Flanders’ Field the Poppies Blow will take place at Wickham Market Village Hall at 6.30pm on Sunday, July 22, featuring poems, songs and stories to demonstrate the conditions faced by those who left home for the battlefield – and those who returned.

A chorus of singers, performing as soldiers, has been rehearsing war-time songs for the event – and made a fortunate find of a key to open the village hall’s piano, which has been unused and neglected for 40 years.

“I am absolutely delighted that we can bring it back to life again,” said Rita Smith, organiser of the event.

The event, which will be followed by light refreshments, is free to attend, though donations are invited for the Village Hall’s redevelopment.

Email ritasmith@uw.club.net or call 01728 746708 to book a place.
