INDEPENDENT investigators are to oversee a probe into a two-vehicle collision involving a marked police car and another car in Lowestoft.

Two male special constables were seriously injured and two men in a Mitsubishi Evolution also required treatment after the collision at about 1.45am on Saturday, February 14.

The case was immediately referred by Suffolk police to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and it has been announced an official investigation is to take place.

IPCC Commissioner David Petch said: “This is a serious incident and we are grateful no-one was killed. However, it is important to determine how the two cars came to collide and I believe an investigation conducted by Suffolk Constabulary with IPCC management will be able to determine this.

“The matter was swiftly referred to us and we have now received a complaint from the family, who we will keep updated and as the investigation progresses.”

A 39-year-old officer is still being treated in hospital for a fractured pelvis and broken arm, and his colleague, aged 37, has now being discharged after suffering a fractured leg.

It has been alleged that a marked police van signalled for the driver of the Mitsubishi to stop in Belvedere Road, but that it failed to stop.

The van lost sight of the Mitsubishi, which was then in collision with the police car, at the junction of Tom Crisp Way and Lowestoft Road, less than a minute later.

n A 28-year-old man from the Yarmouth area was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and drink-driving, and bailed to return to Lowestoft police station on March 7.
