Lee Evans, from Burnham-on-Crouch, died on Friday after being found with multiple stab wounds in Chelmsford.

The 47-year-old was discovered injured in Cromar Way at around 1am. He was taken to Broomfield Hospital, where he later died.

This morning, area coroner Eleanor McGann opened and adjourned an inquest into Mr Evans’ death at Essex Coroner’s Court in Chelmsford.

A post-mortem examination found he suffered multiple stab wounds, and that the cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.

The hearing saw Ms McGann open and adjourn the inquest indefinitely while police enquiries are carried out.

A date for the adjourned hearing will be fixed by the coroner’s service in due course.

Mr Evans’ death sparked a murder investigation, which is being led by DCI Martin Pasmore of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

Four people – three men aged 40, 53 and 59, and a 53-year-old woman – were arrested on Friday on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident.

However, all of them have now been released from custody, and were told they will face no further action.

On Sunday, Mr Evans’ family paid tribute to him.

“Lee was a kind, protective and loving person,” they said.

“He idolised his son, and loved his nephews.

“Lee was very kind, not just to people in the family, but to others as well who knew he would be there to look after them.”

They added: “He loved being with people.

“Animals were Lee’s passion, including his dogs Roxy and Millie. “He was very soft at heart.

“We will miss him more than we can ever say.

“He will always be in our hearts.”

They are being supported by officers as enquiries continue.

Police have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the attack.

Chief Inspector Gerry Parker, district commander for Chelmsford and Maldon, said: “If you do see something which concerns you, please tell an officer or call us on 101.”

Those with information are asked to call 101, quoting reference number 42 of June 22.
