A Colchester man arrested following a suspected fight at a holiday park in Suffolk has died today, it has been confirmed.

Paul Gladwell, 38, was initially detained by staff at Pontin’s Holiday Park in Pakefield near Lowestoft at about 11.40pm on Tuesday after he is understood to have been involved in an altercation.

Suffolk Constabulary was called the scene and Mr Gladwell was arrested on suspicion of assault.

While being driven to Great Yarmouth Police Investigation Centre in a police van officers became concerned for his wellbeing, stopped the van and contacted an ambulance.

The man was treated at the scene before being taken to James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston, Norfolk by ambulance in a critical condition.

Mr Gladwell died today, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has said.

The IPCC has now launched an investigation into the death.

A spokesman for the IPCC said Mr Gladwell’s family had been informed.

Investigators are carrying out house-to-house enquiries, speaking to witnesses and gathering CCTV footage.

IPCC commissioner Cindy Butts said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s relatives and friends at this difficult time.

“Our investigators will be conducting a thorough enquiry into all the circumstances surrounding his interaction with the police.”

A spokeswoman for Suffolk Constabulary said a full investigation into what happened was underway by the IPCC.
