FATHER and son football yobs Barry and Daniel Smith are awaiting their fates today after being found guilty of assaulting police officers.

After their convictions following a two-day trial, the Millwall supporters’ sentencing was adjourned until February 8 by Ipswich magistrates.

Daniel Smith, 19, was told pre-sentence reports would be prepared on him, but he was warned that a financial or community penalty may not be sufficient in his case.

The teenager was convicted of assaulting two police officers outside Ipswich railway station after Millwall’s game at Portman Road on April 21. He had denied the charges.

His father Barry, 50, was convicted of punching one of the officers, although he too denied the charge.

In addition to their sentencing, both men are now facing a British Transport Police application for football banning orders against them which - if successful - would bar them from attending matches or following their team.

During their trial at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court, Pc Gary Hayes, of the BTP, said he had come under a hail of punches from the pair after trouble flared.

When asked to described their behaviour he said: “Extremely violent. They were extremely drunk – indescribable behaviour”.

However, the Smiths claimed they were acting in self defence after Barry Smith was assaulted by a police officer.

Pc Hayes said he had seen a young man outside the Riverside public house opposite the railway station at around 5.35pm.

The young man had been abusing a group of young Ipswich fans. Around 10 to 15 minutes earlier he had seen Daniel Smith abuse an old man wearing and Ipswich Town scarf, but did not approach him as something else occurred.

Pc Hayes said he then went back to the pub where a group of people were abusing youths.

Daniel Smith, of Restons Crescent, London, was not one of the group.

Magistrates were told that while Pc Hayes was speaking to a young man, Daniel Smith came up to him and appeared to be drunk.

One of the officer’s colleagues stepped in to intervene, but Smith became very aggressive.

While he was being restrained his father became involved with Pc Hayes’ colleague who was dealing with Daniel Smith.

The teenager is said to have punched Pc Hayes in the face, cutting his nose. Magistrates were told Barry Smith, of Southlands Grove, Bromley, Kent, then punched the officer several times, as did his son.
