A fish and chip restaurant planned to occupy the former Browne’s menswear store in Upper Brook Street, Ipswich, could open as soon as the summer if plans are given the go ahead.

The menswear store closed in 2015 as a result of declining business and increasing overheads, after more than 80 years run by the same family.

Hasan Orman lodged an application to turn the Grade II Listed building into a traditional fish and chip restaurant called Ocean Fish Basket, with planning permission and listed building consent for a change in its use having been approved.

Now, a listed building consent application has been lodged for internal alterations, due to be decided from late April.

If approved, it is understood the owners would like work to begin soon and hope to open in the summer

Mr Orman, who has lived in Ipswich for around 27 years also runs the Huffers cafe and restaurant in Sudbury.
