It may be the era of Twitter, Facebook, and texting – but for some you can’t beat a good old-fashioned postcard to say you’re have having a great time.

And now there’s a new set of cards showing off some of Ipswich’s newer landmarks on sale at the town’s tourist information centre.

And there could be further postcards produced over the next few months giving modern views of some of the town’s best-known historic sites.

The four new cards – showing three new statues, the fourth is a montage – have been created by Ipswich photographer Fran Sibthorpe on a commission from the tourist information centre.

The postcards feature statues of three famous people connected with the town: Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Prince Alexander Obolensky (England rugby player and fighter pilot) and cartoonist Carl Giles, creator of the famous “Grandma” character.

Carole Jones, Portfolio-holder for Economic Development, said: “One of our projects has been to fund the ‘Ipswich 18’ at Ipswich’s Eastern Enterprise Hub, which supports local people with business ideas they need to develop and test out, and Fran was one of the students.”

Centre manager David Stainer added: “These are the first of several new souvenirs and cards we hope to see produced in the coming months.

“Sending postcards and taking home souvenirs is an important part of many people’s holiday or visit – and also a good way for a destination to be promoted.

“We intend to involve local artists and businesses to come up with fresh ideas and images to use to help publicise the town.”

He added that the centre was considering commissioning further postcards showing historic buildings like the Ancient House, Christchurch Mansion and the Cornhill.

Many existing photographs are showing their age – two years ago Ipswich MP Ben Gummer called into a shop and was able to buy postcards of Ipswich which clearly dated from the late 70s or early 80s.

All the statues featured in the cards are relatively new. The Giles statue was first unveiled in 1993 but was only moved to its new elevated position in 2010. The statue of Prince Obolensky was unveiled in 2009, thanks in large part to a donation from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, and the Thomas Wolsey statue was installed at Curson Square in 2011.
