The store dubbed the most important site in the town centre is to open its doors with a new tenant within the next few weeks.

But the long-term future of the former Grimwades store on the Cornhill is not likely to be decided for some time as negotiations with potential tenants continues.

Clothing store Innovations is currently fitting out the store to open on a short-term lease.

It will be the second short-term tenant in the store since Clinton Cards closed last year – a calendar store was open in the run-up to Christmas.

However Paul Clement from Ipswich Central said the long-term future of the store has still to be decided.

He said: “There are two or three potential tenants negotiating with the agents for the store, EWS, and those talks are continuing.”

It was possible that the former clothes’ store on the Cornhill could be split into small units – not all retail, he added.

The position of the store, opposite Debenhams and facing on to the Cornhill, means it is seen as the most important in the town centre.
