A police constable is embroiled in an alleged road rage inquiry after a cyclist claimed he was knocked off his bike in Ipswich.

The officer was off-duty when the alleged incident took place in Norwich Road.

Suffolk Constabulary has confirmed it is investigating a complaint after police were called following a collision between a car and a bicycle. However, no arrests have been made.

The cyclist Ben Fosdike said he was travelling along Norwich Road near Coe’s outfitters when he heard a fire engine’s siren.

Mr Fosdike, of Donegal Road, Ipswich, said he slowed down and as a result he was ‘tailgated’ by a car.

The 25-year-old claimed he turned around and gestured to the vehicle’s driver to question why he was so close.

It is alleged the car then went to overtake Mr Fosdike, with its wing mirror being very close to the cyclist’s handlebars.

Mr Fosdike said he struck the mirror in order to get the car to move further away. However, he claimed the driver steered his car to the left forcing the bicycle on to kerb, leaving Mr Fosdike under his bike on the pavement.

The cyclist said the driver got out of his vehicle and began shouting at him. Mr Fosdike pushed him away.

The man is then alleged to have pinned Mr Fosdike against the window of a shop.

The incident is said to have ended when a woman from the shop came out to see what was going on.

Mr Fosdike claimed: “I said I would call the police. He (the driver) got back in the car and reversed over the bike and drove up the road. He pulled up 10-15 metres away.

“I didn’t know at the time he was also calling the police.”
