IPSWICH: Expectant mums at Ipswich Hospital will be treated in the comfort of a newly refurbished unit after work to transform the gynaecology department.

The emergency assessment unit and inpatient ward have undergone a makeover to improve privacy and dignity for patients.

Ward matron Hannah English said: “Coming to hospital for gynaecology treatment can be stressful and emotional and we hope the new environment will help women feel welcome and comfortable.”

The changes have been designed to take into account the need for privacy when a patient receives bad news, with confidential consulting rooms and a quiet room for couples to digest what doctors have told them.

Head matron Karen Wolfe said: “These private spaces are so important for discussing sensitive issues with patients and their families.”

The unit, based on the fifth floor of the hospital’s maternity block, has 18 nurses, six healthcare assistants and doctors based on the ward.
