Ipswich: Police arrest man amid fears he planned to jump from Orwell Bridge

POLICE swooped to arrest a man amid fears he was preparing to jump from the Orwell Bridge near Ipswich.

Officers were scrambled around 11.10pm on Wednesday after the 23-year-old’s relatives reported he was en route to the bridge.

The man, who police said was from the Ipswich area, was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to the town’s St Clement’s Hospital.

A force spokesman said: “We got to the bridge at 11.19pm and we saw a young chap and we took him to one side and arrested him under the Mental Health Act.

“We took him to the Woodlands unit at St Clemet’s Hospital.”
