MORE than 92 percent of suspects taken to court for burglary offences were convicted this year, new figures reveal.

Suffolk police, who released the figures, are continuing their fight against burglars under ‘Operation Drawbridge’, which aims to reduce the number of burglaries committed across the county. Officers are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to ensure that those responsible for committing offences are brought to justice.

Detective Chief Inspector Bernie Morgan, who is leading Operation Drawbridge, said: “The statistics for this year show that we are working well with our colleagues in the CPS to ensure that the right people are arrested, strong evidence is gathered, and prosecutions are brought to criminals who commit these offences.

“Although our figures show that burglaries are reducing across the county, we still have work to do to improve our ‘solved’ rate.

“With the help of our colleagues in the CPS we are confident that we will continue to prosecute those responsible and bring a sense of justice to those who have been affected by these crimes.”

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for East of England Crown Prosecution Service, Paula Abrahams, said: “When someone breaks into our home, it’s not just our possessions that are taken, the burglar also steals the sense of security we have that our home is a safe place.

“The CPS is committed to building strong cases with the police so that burglars are held to account for their crimes and pay the penalty.”
